Might Netflix be able to tell when you’ve fallen asleep?

The streaming service have created new technology which can pause your programme when you doze off

You know when you’re watching back to back episodes on Netflix? You’ve been glued to the screen for hours, but it’s late. You accidentally dose off and miss that all important moment when Dawson kisses Joey. I mean, when that really shocking thing happens in House of Cards…

And the episodes keep on rolling while you snooze and before you know if you’ve lost your place?

Well, that might not be the case for much longer. At an internal “hack day” for developers, those clever folk over at Netflix developed technology that is able to pause programmes as you doze off.

The clever concept involves users wearing a Fitbit fitness wristband which can detect when you nod off. The device then pauses your programme at that point, displays a message saying “Looks like you fell asleep!” and saves your place so you can start watching from that point once you’ve caught up on your beauty sleep. Clever, right?

The only snag is that the technology might never actually be used. “We should also note that, while we think these hacks are very cool and fun, they may never become part of the Netflix product,” say the company.
