Nine years ago Sienna Guillory broke Colin Firth’s heart in hit British ensemble comedy Love Actually – will she do the same to Idris Elba’s tough cop Luther?
The Resident Evil actress has been cast as Luther’s new love interest in the third and final series of Neil Cross’s critcally acclaimed BBC1 drama series, which began filming four new hour-long episodes earlier this week.
Fans can expect DCI John Luther back under intense pressure as he investigates two conflicting crimes and a ruthless ex-copper hellbent on bringing him down.
Guillory will play vintage clothes shop worker Mary who takes up with the maverick detective following a chance encounter. “You realise why Luther is so good when you read Neil Cross’s scripts, and then you meet Idris and understand what ‘untamed’ means,” she said.
“There is no other set I’d rather be on, and I love the disastrous fun of being Mary Day, the right girl in the wrong place.
Star of the show, Idris Elba, added: “I want to thank the fans for waiting so patiently for the new season. We’re thrilled to deliver it to you. Here comes John!”
The new series of Luther is due to be broadcast on BBC1 in 2013, ending a long wait for viewers after season two concluded back in July 2011.
Warren Brown, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Dermot Crowley and Michael Smiley are all set to reprise their roles, alongside additional guest stars Lucian Msamati (Game of Thrones) and Ned Dennehy (Parade’s End).
The first picture of Idris Elba on set was tweeted out from the official Luther account earlier this week – take a look here.
