Just days after the trailer for Luc Besson’s Valerian blew our minds with all sorts of sci-fi visuals, the first look at manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell is here to deliver another rich tapestry of gadgets, action and futuristic cityscapes.

Scarlett Johansson stars as counter-cyberterrorist field commander the Major, an ass-kicking part-robot superhero type sent after computer hackers, which seems like an overreaction considering an ordinary policeman could probably just go and pick them up.

Still, it’s certainly an impressive-looking taste of a film still unfamiliar to many outside of the accusations of whitewashing that surround it after Johansson was cast as an originally Asian character.

Can the film’s technical impressiveness overcome the bad publicity? Who knows – but if the filmmakers have more enticing footage to reveal, now might be the time to do it.
