The actor who plays Danny Latimer’s killer in ITV’s hit drama Broadchurch was forced to wear an elaborate disguise to keep his surprise comeback a secret.
“When we were filming, I did have to go around in a wig and glasses with my hood up, just in case [I was spotted],” Matthew Gravelle revealed on ITV’s This Morning.
His character Joe Miller made a sensational return on Monday night when he pleaded not guilty to the murder of schoolboy Danny Latimer. He had confessed – and was also seen perpetrating the crime in a flashback – at the end of series one. Now it remains to be seen whether he will be found guilty of murder.
Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, the actor said he hadn’t received any negative reaction from the public after being revealed as the killer but as a precaution he talked to his children about the possible ramifications.
“The [children] get it, they just know that [acting is] what we [me and my wife] do and they know it’s pretend so they’re not affected by it and I kind of briefed our kids before the first one came out, just before the revelation and said ‘look there’s this programme, it’s been quite successful, people might come up and say you’re a killer. I’m not a killer it’s pretend.’”
The actor – who is married to fellow Welsh performer Mali Harries – also recounted a story about the couple auditioning to play spouses in another drama.
“We separately auditioned for the characters and the director knew that we were [a couple] but nobody else did and the director said, ‘I want these two’ but the producers were like ‘well they don’t look like a couple.’ We’ve been married for 15 years, it’s going to be our 16 this year!”
The actor also disclosed that being voted the 24th sexiest man in Wales is a demotion.
“I’ve got to be honest, I’ve been higher when I was younger but age creeps up. I’m glad to be in it. It’s nice to be counted.”
Broadchurch was watched by 7.5 million viewers keen to see what would happen to David Tennant’s Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman’s Ellie Miller.
Broadchurch series two continues on ITV at 9pm on Mondays
