It’s official. Mrs Hughes is everyone’s favourite Downton Abbey character.
The Crawley’s kindly housekeeper has topped a poll to find the best Downton Abbey character of all time, beating off competition from the quick-witted Dowager Countess, Lady Mary and Mr Bates to reach the top spot.
Mrs Hughes – the kingpin of the Abbey who knows everyone’s secrets and solves everyone’s problems – went up against a whole host of Downton favourites from past and present, including Matthew Crawley, Lady Sybil, O’Brien and Kemal Pamuk and won an impressive 35% of the vote.
Lady Mary came in second with 18%, followed by Tom Branson, Thomas Barrow, Mr Bates and the Dowager Countess, who took sixth place. Hughes’ ally below-stairs Mr Carson came in eighth with 2.3% of the vote.
Speaking to RadioTimes.com Phyllis Logan said: “There’s no accounting for taste! But seriously, I’m absolutely delighted. Thanks to everyone who voted for me – and Julian must take some of the credit for creating the character in the first place.”
The poll, which took place on RadioTimes.com, attracted over 23,000 votes.
Downton Abbey continues on Sunday at 9:00pm on ITV
