While viewers in the UK can still look forward to new episodes of The Pitt each week for a while, those in the US now have a wait on their hands, as season 2 has finished airing Stateside.

Thankfully, the show's consistent release schedule looks set to continue, with executive producer and director, John Wells, teasing that a January 2027 release date for season 3 seems likely, just as seasons 1 and 2 started airing in that month in back-to-back years.

Wells told Deadline: "The writers' room opened up last week, and they’re at the end of their second week. We will be back in production in June, and plan to be back on the air again the same week in January with 15 episodes next year."

Meanwhile, creator, writer and executive producer R Scott Gemmill told the publication, in an interview conducted on April 7, that they have "figured out most of the season, but in broad strokes".

The final episode of season 2 saw fans say goodbye to a character who has featured prominently in the show from the start, Supriya Ganesh's Dr Mohan. She was last seen on the roof of the hospital, watching the fireworks with her colleagues.

While some fans may have hoped that Ganesh could return in a future season, Gemmill told Deadline that the scene on the roof will be the final time viewers ever see her on the show.

"The nature of the business of a teaching hospital is that people come and go, and we try to be as realistic as possible," he said. "We’ve had people leave, and we will continue to have people leave over the course of the show.

"It has its downside because you get to like a character, and then they move on. But that’s sort of what life is like, especially in these working environments. People will come, and people will go, and that’s just the nature of the show."

Gemmill also said that viewers will "for sure" have to continue to say goodbye to characters as each season passes.

The Pitt season 1 is available to watch on HBO Max in the UK now. Season 2 is available in full in the US, while it is continuing to release new episodes weekly on Thursdays in the UK.
