David O Russell’s previously untitled conman film has been named as American Hustle.
The forthcoming drama, which centers on the actions of a con-artist couple in 1970s America, will see the director reunite with Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, the stars of his Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook.
American Hustle follows two con artists who are forced to work alongside a federal agent to oust other criminals as well as uncover corrupt politicians. The story is loosely based on the Abscam sting operation of the 1970s which led to the conviction of a number of corrupt American government officials.
The film, which also stars The Dark Knight Rises’ Christian Bale, The Master’s Amy Adams and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Jeremy Renner, was previously rumoured to be called American Bullshit, but it seems the director has plumped for a more marketable title.
Christian Bale and Amy Adams are pipped to play the leading roles with Jennifer Lawrence playing Bale’s character’s wife and Bradley Cooper taking up the role of a wayward federal agent.
The film is yet to have a release date in the UK, but with a December 2013 date confirmed in the US, American Hustle is expected to be a contender in the 2014 awards season.
