Has EastEnders just done the unthinkable and killed off Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden)? Scenes just broadcast saw the Walford hard man taking the brunt of a gas blast, with the doof-doof showing Phil lying comatose (and possibly dead) on a pile of bin bags!

Phil had already endured a fraught half-hour of drama after being punched by Billy and confronted by Jay. But little did he know that worse was to come as he stood on the site of the old car lot.

Just as protests against council cuts intensified at the Walford in Bloom event, an explosion sent the locals flying through the air – Phil being visibly knocked off his feet and thrown into a stack of refuse (the Mitchells will be glad that rubbish collections are so infrequent in Albert Square should Phil pull through).

Monday’s episode marked the start of a high-profile week for EastEnders, with the BBC1 soap promising drama that will ‘shatter’ lives in the Square. At least one character will meet their maker by Friday, while Ted Murray (Christopher Timothy) is set to shoot a show regular.
