EastEnders re-casts Johnny Carter with actor Ted Reilly

Reilly replaces Sam Strike, who left the Square after a 12 month stint back in 2014

Last time we saw Johnny Carter he was leaving Walford to live in Italy with boyfriend Gianluca, but now he’s coming home – and he may look a little different.

Actor Ted Reilly replaces Sam Strike as Mick and Linda’s son, and is set to have quite a big year following his homecoming.

Johnny missed the big reveal about Dean Wicks having attacked his mother, and also wasn’t around to discover that Shirley Carter was his grandmother, not his aunt.

“I’m truly delighted to be joining such an iconic show,” said Reilly. “The Carters are a fantastic family and I can’t wait to get started!”

You might recognise Reilly from smaller TV roles on Call The Midwife (you can see him in action in the picture above), Grantchester and Casualty, and he also has a string of theatre credits to his name.

“Johnny is a key member of the Carter family and he’s been missing over the past year and a half, when so much has happened to the Carters,” said EastEnders’ executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins. “As the family embark on their next big storyline to take them through 2016, it felt wrong not to have Johnny back to play a big part in that –and learn everything that has happened while he has been away.

“We have so much in store for Johnny and so many stories to tell and, after massive casting sessions and recalls with Danny and Kellie, we have found in Ted not only a brilliant actor, but the perfect Johnny Carter.”
