EastEnders favourites Kat and Alfie Moon are to be hit by two bombshells that will serve as the catalyst for their upcoming spin-off show.
“There are two massive twists coming up for Kat and Alfie in the next couple of weeks in the main show that will give you clues as to what the spin-off show is about,” executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins commented at Wednesday night’s Bafta TV Awards nominations party.
Actors Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie are to both temporarily leave the BBC1 soap in order to film the six-part Ireland-set drama, which is due to be broadcast on BBC1 in 2016. Treadwell-Collins confirmed yesterday that the pair will be gone from EastEnders “for a while” before adding that it would be “worth the wait”.
Of the new Kat and Alfie project, he said: “We want to create something big around them. EastEnders as a brand can afford to do it and I’ve always wanted to do something like that. I’m from Ireland originally, so it’s a place I know well. Shane’s Irish, Jessie’s half Irish – so, there’s an Irish connection between all of us.
“The other important thing about the spin-off show is it’s not just about Kat and Alfie – we’ve created a whole new world and a new lot of characters. The writers have created a really lovely, interesting world, but also with our style of storytelling.”
As to whether EastEnders would suffer as a result of losing two of its biggest characters, Treadwell-Collins added: “Not at all because we’ve got the strongest cast we’ve ever had. And the show can keep moving without Shane and Jessie.
“We’re in a very envious position and I would never have sacrificed either the health of EastEnders or Kat and Alfie’s characters. But, in this instance, they can stand on their own in the new series.”
