First look at Vanessa Redgrave in Call the Midwife’s Christmas special

The narrator of the BBC1 period drama is poised to make her first appearance on screen as a mature Jenny Lee in the festive episode

After nine long (and really rather fitting) months, Call the Midwife is poised to return to our screens this Christmas and we’ve got a sneak peek at the episode’s most exciting star: Vanessa Redgrave.

Sure, she’s no Nonnatus newbie. Redgrave’s soothing tones have been heard at the opening and closing credits of Call the Midwife since episode one, conveying the wise and moving words of Jennifer Worth. But this Christmas Redgrave is set to appear on screen for the very first time, as an elderly version of the woman she narrates.

The episode will see Worth, who penned the books the drama is based on, preparing for Christmas, decades after she was Jenny Lee – a midwife working in the East End.

Sadly Worth died before the first series aired on BBC1 so it’s a touching tribute to the woman who started it all. And a nice way to tie up Jenny Lee’s storyline after Jessica Raine, the actress who played her, left at the end of series three.

Call the Midwife returns for a Christmas special later this year
