Conman Lewis Archer has been stringing unsuspecting Gail McIntyre (Helen Worth) along for weeks. His ruse is to get her to stump up the cash for their new life in Naples, with Gail unaware that the dream is nothing but a fantasy. Yet the rules of the game soon look set to change after her family catches them together. So are Lewis’s plans are under threat?
“He had tried to keep it all a secret while he got under his spell, but by the time Gail’s family makes the discovery he’s got her hook, line and sinker, so there’s no chance of them talking her out of it,” reveals Nigel Havers, who plays Lewis. “He does feel bad for Audrey, though.”
The end of Lewis’s relationship with Audrey (Sue Nicholls) was, of course, the catalyst for Lewis wreaking revenge on Gail, the person he blames for the break-up. So does Lewis still have feelings for the woman he lost?
“Audrey is the love of Lewis’s life, without a doubt,” continues Havers. “For her, he would have given up his past and settled down in Weatherfield. Audrey believed in him and loved him despite knowing all his faults and he is furious he has lost that.”
That fury manifests itself after Lewis overhears Kylie (Paula Lane) discussing the possible paternity of her baby with Nick (Ben Price). Using the information to his advantage, Lewis sets about blackmailing Kylie, promising her that the secret will remain safe if she gets him Gail’s bank account log-in and password:
“This is just perfect for Lewis. It couldn’t have come at a better time. This is the way that he’s managed to con people throughout his life – by always being in the right place at the right time and using snippets of information to his advantage. He does like Nick and Kylie, but this is a means to an end for him. It’s played right into his hands and they will now become collateral damage for his bigger scheme.”
So will Gail’s Italian dream turn into a nightmare? Find out in next week’s episodes of Coronation Street on ITV.
