The bodies hit the beach in this self-aware action comedy that sees devoted lifeguard Dwayne Johnson and his cocky new recruit Zac Efron put aside their differences to uncover a murderous plot. Slow running, swimsuits, melodrama... this feature update of the wildly popular 1990s TV show knows exactly where the strengths, and weaknesses, of its source material lie. Therefore everything is done with tongue firmly in cheek, evolving the premise into a crude, but often charming popcorn movie. A visual gag or retro reference is never far away, and the flimsy plot is held together by Johnson and Efron, whose comedy double act give the film its greatest strength. Priyanka Chopra gets the tone just right as the dastardly but fabulous villain. It's not the height of sophistication, but then neither was its predecessor. This new generation wins you over by never really taking itself too seriously, while keeping enough of what make the brand famous in the first place.
Summary
A veteran lifeguard commands a highly trained team that keeps the sun-kissed resort of Emerald Bay safe. As he breaks in some new recruits - including an insubordinate former Olympic swimmer - he has to contend with a dangerous new drug sweeping the beach. Action comedy based on the TV series, starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Priyanka Chopra.
