EastEnders to introduce its first transgender character

Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins revealed details of the upcoming plotline at Student Pride

EastEnders boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed that he is set to introduce Walford’s first transgender character.

Speaking on a panel at Student Pride in London, the show’s executive producer commented that the plotline is currently in the planning stages and that he is looking to cast a trans actor.

“We are looking at a trans storyline. We try and do all our research because we want to tell it properly,” said Treadwell-Collins. “Also, I would want to cast a trans actor. The pen hasn’t hit the paper yet. I am looking for actors and I need the right character. You also don’t want to mess up the story because EastEnders reaches so many people and a lot of our audience are quite traditional.”

On the potential for EastEnders to change perceptions, he added: “The power of EastEnders is we can change the world a little. You change it gently.”

Coronation Street was the first soap to introduce a transgender character back in 1998 when Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh) was introduced to the show. More recently, Blessing Chambers (Modupe Adeyeye) in Hollyoaks revealed to Tony Hutchinson in 2014 that she is a transgender woman.
