Gary Windass came close to ruining his chances with Sarah by keeping quiet about her daughter Bethany’s diet pill addiction, but a reconciliation is on the cards next week in Coronation Street. Despite the many obstacles in the way of their relationship – including Gail’s disapproval and the fact that Bethany is harbouring secret feelings for Gary – the pair end up meeting for a romantic rendezvous.
Actor Mikey North discusses Gary’s feelings for Sarah and what their relationship might mean for the other people in their lives.
What is it about Sarah that Gary has fallen for?
Gary likes the idea of being able to take care of someone. He thinks she’s funny, nice and attractive. He’s looking for someone he can move on with. I think they are two similar characters who have been through similar things. It’s a really lovely pairing.
Is Gary hoping that Sarah will give him another chance?
Sarah finds out that Gary has hidden the fact that he knew about Bethany’s diet pills, but he was just trying to help! She keeps telling him she’s got other things to think about, and obviously a lot of that is to do with her brother. He’s hoping that she will give it another go.
What does he think his chances are?
Knowing Gary’s luck the chances are going to be pretty slim! But he thinks it is worth persevering because he feels there’s a spark between them. They are well suited, and I think they both see that, but it’s about how they move forward.
Does Gary have any idea that Bethany might be smitten with him?
I don’t think so. It’s genuinely just a one-way feeling. Gary doesn’tt sense it at all and I imagine if and when it all comes out it will be a shock to him. He’s just trying to help Bethany because he likes her mum and he sees this as a way into her good books, whereas Bethany may interpret his kind gestures in a different way.
Do you think that this could be a problem in the future?
It’s got to be, it’s Coronation Street isn’t it? I am sure there is going to be something down the line.
Gail warns Sarah away from Gary at the start of the week – is Gary aware of that?
He’s unaware of it to start with even though it’s one of the reasons why Sarah is ignoring him. Obviously Gail is not best pleased about her daughter’s choice of man, mainly because when Gary first arrived on the street there was his feud with David. For Gail, that hasn’t gone away. He is going to have to find a way around that.
What happens when he bumps into Sarah in the ginnel?
He gets a text saying, ‘meet me’ – it’s all very mysterious. He meets Sarah down the ginnel but he can’t see her at first and she kind of jumps out at him. Gary’s bemused by it all and gives her an ultimatum – if you can’t tell anyone about me then let’s just leave it. Sarah confesses that she wants Gary and they have a passionate kiss… Against a brick wall, of all the romantic places.
How does Gary feel afterwards?
It’s a bit Romeo and Juliet in the sense that they are star-crossed lovers and no one is allowed to know about them. They agree to keep it quiet so Bethany, Anna and Gail. Cue flirty glances across the Rovers.
Gary has an ex on the street – what will his new relationship mean for Izzy?
Gary is still living with Izzy to help with Jake, so who knows how that is going to turn out? It will come out eventually that he and Sarah are together! I imagine that’s going to be the next confrontation – how will Izzy deal with that? Gary might end up homeless!
