A night of BBC specials planned for Peggy Mitchell’s EastEnders exit

Barbara Windsor will be the subject of a One Show edition coming live from the set of the soap

BBC1 will broadcast a special edition of The One Show live from the set of EastEnders prior to Barbara Windsor bowing out of the London-set soap.

The show will feature an extensive pre-filmed interview with Windsor, who will be seen admitting that her mother would have disliked the character of Peggy Mitchell:

“My mother would have hated that character. She was a Cockney snob. She always wanted to better herself you see. She’d be like ‘I sent you to all those elocution lessons and look at ya,'” she tells presenters Alex Jones and Matt Baker.

Speaking about the experience, Jones said: “It was wonderful to meet my all-time favourite EastEnders character. She was very welcoming and we had a fascinating chat about her long and fabulous career, on and off the square. Dame Barbara and Peggy certainly share the same warmth and infectious laugh!

“She is a living showbiz legend and although it will be sad to say goodbye to Peggy, Matt and I hope that we will continue to see Dame Barbara on our screens for a long time yet.”

Following the broadcast of Peggy’s demise on BBC1, EastEnders fans will then get the opportunity to see the iPlayer special Peggy Mitchell: Last Orders in which Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden discuss what the exit of their screen mum means to them.
