New Emmerdale producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that he has an autumn thriller planned for the ITV soap, a “grand scale” drama that will be “The Big Chill meets Final Destination”.
Speaking about the October plotline, the show boss explained: “We’re talking about doing something that, from a narrative point of view, is a little bit different to the way in which we would normally tell stories. Something that’s big, grand scale and tragic but also kind of mischievous and fun – kind of a bit bonkers, but the right side of bonkers, I think. I’m really excited about it.
“The managing director of ITV Studios North, when I pitched him the outline for it, said it’s like The Big Chill meets Final Destination. Make of that what you will – I’m not even sure I agree with it necessarily, but hopefully it’s intriguing.”
As cinema aficionados know, the 1983 classic The Big Chill saw seven former college friends gather for a weekend reunion, while horror movie Final Destination – from the year 2000 – found Death stalking a group of American teenagers.
As for what the Emmerdale version will look like, MacLeod teases: “It will involve essentially the whole village and there’ll be high stakes jeopardy for a lot of character groups – not the least of which will be Cain, Moira, Holly, Adam and Victoria. But all the big hitters, really.”
Cain and Moira – in danger?
All of which has got us wondering: what could this Emmerdale mash-up of two film hits be like? Will members of the extended Barton clan descend on Butler’s Farm for a mini break only to picked off one by one until just Cain is left standing armed with a shotgun?
Is a lock-in at the Woolpack complete with all the village regulars to result in carnage thanks to falling optics, poisoned food and yet another ill-timed storm?
Or maybe the ghost of Cameron Murray will mark the three-year anniversary of his death by turning grim reaper and getting revenge on those that did him wrong!
We look forward to finding out whether any of this proves to be true (not likely, we have to admit).
