EastEnders: get a first look at Charlie Slater’s death

Actor Derek Martin's final scenes on the BBC1 soap will air later this month

EastEnders has released brand-new images that show the moment cabbie Charlie Slater (Derek Martin) meets his maker in an upcoming episode of the BBC1 soap.

The exit of patriarch Charlie is to air on Tuesday 7 January, when the character suffers a fatal heart attack after making a return visit to Albert Square.

The cardiac arrest happens in the wake of his daughter Kat (Jessie Wallace) discovering that she had a son who was taken away from her.

Unable to cope with the news, Charlie collapses and Kat will be seen taking control. Charlie tries to talk to his daughter, but as he asks for her forgiveness for the past, it all becomes too much and she goes to wait outside.

Sharon then spots Kat and, realising that something is wrong, encourages her to go back inside to be there for her dad.

The paramedics arrive shortly afterwards and announce that there is nothing they can do – Charlie has died.

The character of cabbie Charlie first appeared in 2000 and although actor Derek Martin left in 2011, he has made sporadic reappearances.

A show insider said recently to the Mirror: “Charlie’s death is going to hit Kat hard. His storyline will be the catalyst for her to learn more secrets which will see her and Alfie (Shane Richie) eventually head to Ireland.

“Charlie’s death is going to be a real tearjerker for the audience, too, and they will be waiting to see if he and Kat can mend bridges before he dies.
