Emmerdale is set to destroy the village wall in a fiery explosion, killing off main characters in the process and leaving several others on the critical list, according to reports.
It has not yet been announced who will meet their maker in the disaster, although the set-piece stunt is set to coincide with the upcoming wedding of Pete Barton and Debbie Dingle.
The ITV soap recently launched a trailer which hinted at the show’s most familiar faces being bumped off over the summer months.
Among those who have already announced their exits from Emmerdale are Charlie Hardwick (Val Pollard), Gemma Oaten (Rachel Breckle) and Natalie Anderson (Alicia Metcalfe).
A source told the Sun today: “The writers felt it was time for a shake-up, so that is what we are doing. The village hall felt a bit tired and run down, so what better way to bring it into the 21st century than to blow it up?
“It will see deaths and injuries as some of the show’s biggest characters are pulled out of the rubble covered in blood and mud.”
In recent years, the villagers have been involved in a siege and flood at the Woolpack, while the most famous and well-remembered catastrophe to hit Emmerdale remains the 1993 plane crash which gave the soap its highest ever viewing figures of 18 million.
Speaking today to RadioTimes.com, an Emmerdale spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on speculative pieces regarding storylines.”
