Steve McDonald will try to mask his mental anguish over Christmas 2104, but the festive season looks set to lead to further troubles.
Says actor Simon Gregson: “Christmas Day is good but the rest of it is not too clever. He drags himself up for his daughter Amy, but goes a bit overboard. He invites everybody the world and his dog and tried to make it the best Christmas ever. But, in true Steve style, it doesn’t go quite to plan…”
This Friday’s episodes of Coronation Street will see Steve breaking up with girlfriend Michelle (Kym Marsh) after failing to tell her about his inner struggles. And next week’s visits to Weathefield find the beleaguered pub owner told by his GP that he is suffering with depression.
Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle, reveals that her character will get to spend time with Steve over Christmas but that things won’t go as she intended. “It’ll be bittersweet. She does get to spend it with Steve but I don’t think it’s the Christmas reunion she will be hoping for. In the new year, I’d like things to sort themselves out for her and Steve. I’d love them to get back together and resolve their issues and get Steve back to being himself.”
And yet 2015 will get off to a bad start for Steve and his friends and neighbours when a mini-bus that he’s driving crashes. The collision, which is set to leave some of the Street’s famous residents fighting for their lives, is currently being filmed during night shoots in Manchester.
