This is Where I Leave You director Shawn Levy knew there was something special about Tina Fey.
The two of them worked together on Date Night with Steve Carell before Levy cast her in his latest film. Though This is Where I Leave You is a very different kind of comedy. It’s darker and more dramatic…
“I knew the casting was everything because every character was so vividly drawn. I started with Tina which is unusual because normally you start with you protagonist which would have been the Judd role,” said Levy.
“I’d a sense of her awesomeness… I knew there was a dramatic performance in Tina Fey. I felt like I knew something that most people didn’t.”
And persuading her to take the part was a doddle, says Levy.
“I went to Tina first with this script, with this character and I said, ‘You’re going to get a chance to be funny as hell, you’re going to swear your ass off because it’s going to be R-rated but you’re also going to be able to show some different colours’ – and she was up for that.”
This is Where I Leave You, which stars Jason Bateman, Corey Stoll, Adam Driver and Jane Fonda, tells the story of the Altmans, four grown siblings who are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof for one week after their father passes away.
