Two soap icons are set to unite in upcoming drama Number One Fan – which is coming soon to 5 – and Radio Times can exclusively reveal a first look trailer for the series.

The show is set within the world of morning television, and stars former EastEnders actress Jill Halfpenny and Coronation Street legend Sally Lindsay as TV presenter Lucy Logan and her somewhat intense fan Donna respectively.

The trailer – which you can find below – begins with Lucy signing off from one of her broadcasts by saying: "That's it for today, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Without you, there is no show."

We then cut to Donna speaking to her outside, telling her: "Oh my gosh, it is you. I watch Lucy Logan Live every day. I'm your number one fan."

Soon, Lucy has invited her into the studio to watch them record an episode, but it doesn't take long before she confesses that "Donna's starting to creep me out" – which isn't altogether surprising given she's leaving her messages in lipstick on her dressing room mirror.

And it turns out that Donna may not be the innocent fan she was claiming to be. After Lucy explains that she now can't go anywhere without seeing Donna, we hear the latter declare: "The world is going to discover who Lucy really is."

It turns out that Donna is in possession of some kind of incriminating video of Lucy that – if it gets out – would ruin her reputation and presumably her career.

"Let me make myself very clear," Lucy tells her tormentor towards the end of the trailer. "Go after me or my family and I will kill you with my bare hands."

You can watch the trailer in full below:

The full synopsis for the four-part series teases: "Jill Halfpenny plays morning show presenter Lucy; the nation’s sweetheart, BFF and presenter of ‘Lucy Live’.

"She tells it like it is with a big smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She’s ambitious, hardworking and beneath it all, thoroughly ruthless.

"Sally Lindsay is Donna; an obsessed fan who appears as a mousey, non-threatening nobody, but steps in to save Lucy from a horrific attack. Lucy’s gratitude quickly sours when Donna’s fandom turns into a darker obsession infiltrating Lucy’s career, family and friends.

"However to her horror Lucy comes to realise that Donna has a link to a hidden secret in her past which threatens to derail the career she has so carefully curated."

When the casting was first announced in January, executive producer Mike Benson said: “We’ve obviously worked numerous times with two of the most talented actresses in the country in Sally and Jill – but never before in the same show.

"Seeing them both together on screen – and in two very surprising roles – is something I know viewers will be every bit as excited about as we are."

Both stars have appeared in a number of previous dramas for 5, with Halfpenny's credits including The Drowning, The Cuckoo and The Flood, and Lindsay starring in The Madame Blanc Mysteries and Love Rat.

Number One Fan is coming soon to 5.
