Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has been there, done that and got the t-shirt when it comes to reality singing contests, but her advice for wannabe stars isn’t likely to please head judge Simon Cowell.
“Don’t try and impress Simon, stop it!” Cheryl says when asked what tips she can give. Cheryl’s been through this type of show herself after all, winning Popstars: The Rivals as part of girl band Girls Aloud in 2002.
“The moment you put that pressure on yourself and he says something that isn’t what you want to hear, it’s going to break your confidence. You should go out there to prove to us all.
“Just relax and be confident, but don’t walk that line of cockiness. Once I get the acts as a mentor, I’ll sit them down individually and tell that that,” Cheryl adds.
Viewers will be expecting sparks to fly between Simon and Cheryl, given the last time they worked together on The X Factor was in the US in 2011 when Cheryl was swapped out after just one show.
They say they’re on good terms again, but Cheryl jokes, “I think Simon’s a bit like an annoying brother. We’re like brother and sister and he’s the annoying one.
“Simon has his very own way of being annoying. He knows which buttons to push and he’ll push them, and push them, and push them. But I play the long game. I’m waiting. Don’t worry about me, I’ll get my own back.”
The X Factor returns Saturday 30 August at 8:00pm on ITV
