Alfie (Shane Richie) and Kat (Jessie Wallace) may have finally got their happy ever after, but it seems that this is far from the end of the story. In scenes to be shown next week, spurned lover Roxy (Rita Simons) will wreak her revenge and – as Shane Richie reveals – the consequences look set to be momentous for the Moons.

“Instead of becoming downtrodden and all woe-is-me, Roxy actually goes back to being the wild child,” Richie tells RadioTimes.com. “She throws it all in his face, gets drunk, falls off a table and cops off with Carl. We play the aftermath quite well. Alfie wants to shout from the rooftops that he and Kat are back together, but Kat has to remind him not to rub Roxy’s nose in it. But Roxy does end up being instrumental in getting Alfie kicked out of the pub.”

So, on whose side does Richie think the viewers will be as the dramatic events unfold? “Well, I can imagine that the audience will be split. Some will go, ‘you horrible b*****d leaving Roxy at the last minute at the church’. But I’m hoping others will say, ‘hold on, he wanted to do the right thing. He was prepared to marry Roxy’. Those that root for Kat and Alfie do so because there’s 12 years of history there. Jessie and I have been given a storyline that’s a real honour to play.”

And how does the actor feel about the past 12 months that Alfie has spent with Roxy – does he think that the storyline worked? “Well, it did happen very quickly,” he admits. “After Alfie found out about Kat’s affair with Derek, I personally think we should have waited and seen Alfie on his own for a while. But, having said that, if there had been a slow burn between Alfie and Roxy, it would have been harder to see him dump her at the altar. And, at the end of the day, I do think people just want to see Alfie happy.”
