The end for X Factor USA? More gloom for Simon Cowell as the show records lowly 6.6m audience

The show continues to underperform with Wednesday night's edition failing to get out of the 6 million rating zone according to the latest figures - increasing the threat of the axe

Time may be running out for The X Factor USA which has just recorded a disappointing 6.6 million ratings figure, according to the US overnights.

Wednesday night’s edition of the Fox talent show saw it fail to escape the kind of disappointing audience it gleaned in its first week – when it recorded ratings of 6.2 and 6.8 million respectively. The news will only fuel speculation that this third series may be the last.

The figures represent quite some decline from the approximately 9 million U.S. viewers who tuned in to The X Factor USA season two premiere in 2012. About 12.5 million American viewers watched the the season one premiere in 2011.

As revealed on Wednesday, sources close to Cowell are at pains to point out he is “in a good place” at the moment and relaxed about this below par start. But even they were honest enough to admit: “We have got a good series this year, we just need more people to watch it.”

The disappointing ratings performance is understood to be leading some at Fox to consider not recommissioning the show.

Now in its third series it has undergone many tweaks but it has failed to dent the audience for the NBC reality show America’s Got Talent which was the highest-rated U.S. show last week with 9.8 million U.S. viewers on September 11.
