Disney to take Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl to the big screen

Harvey Weinstein and Disney Studios are coming together to turn the popular children's fantasy novel into a film

Popular children’s book Artemis Fowl is set to get the big screen treatment.

The fantasy bestseller by Eoin Colfer is being turned into a movie by Walt Disney Studios – and there are already some big names attached to the project.

Harvey Weinstein, whose recent CV includes The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Kill Bill, The Artist and The King’s Speech, is set to produce the film, while Harry Potter screenwriter Michael Goldenberg is on board to write the script and Robert De Niro is set to executive produce.

President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, Sean Bailey, said of the project: “With its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal, Artemis Fowl is a natural fit for Disney. We’re looking forward to collaborating with Harvey on this exciting project.”

Artemis Fowl is the first novel in an eight-part fantasy series following teenage criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II. While his father is missing and his mother suffers a nervous breakdown, Artemis sets about trying to save his family fortune and find his father, which leads to an encounter with the fairy world.
