Coronation Street: Natalie Gumede confirms her exit from the soap

The actress, who plays abusive Kirsty Soames, will film her final scenes next week

Natalie Gumede has confirmed that she is leaving Coronation Street and will film her final scenes next week.

Gumede, who plays Kirsty Soames on the ITV soap, wrote on Twitter: “I can now confirm what you all suspected: Corrie is on a Kirsty countdown!! The last 18 months have been incredible, thank you all so much! Your support has touched me greatly, and working with the Corrie team has been an honour and a pleasure!

“Thank you Alan Halsall for your generosity as a person and as an actor! And all of my castmates, crewmates and all who look after us so well. After my final Corrie filming day next week, I will look back with love, and look forward to new adventures xxx”

The actress is currently at the centre of a long-running storyline that has seen Kirsty physically abuse her partner Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), only to then accuse him of hurting her. Tyrone will be shown attempting to prove his innocence in an upcoming trial.

Natalie Gumede made her debut on Coronation Street in September 2011 and was nominated in the category of Most Popular Newcomer at this year’s National Television Awards. In January, she said to of her time on the Street:

“Everyone is going to want to see her face her comeuppance and have some justice for Tyrone. Especially when you consider how far Kirsty has gone in terms of the physical abuse and manipulation of Tyrone and the people around him. So I’m very aware that Kirsty could well have a shelf life.”
