Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Spring break in Mexico takes a deadly turn for six students conned into playing a supernatural version of the titular game at an abandoned mission. Back home, they are then forced to continue participating with fatal consequences - death for those who tell a lie or refuse the challenge - because the childish party game is possessed by a malevolent spirit. Director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) recalls the uneven tone and daftness of his debut feature Cry_Wolf here, and although it comes from the Blumhouse company (producers of Split, Happy Death Day and the Oscar-winning Get Out), this schlocky horror show is stale goods indeed, often resembling a low-rent Final Destination. The truth? It's mediocre fright fare, which is not particularly scary (the CGI demonic facials just don't cut it), and covers absolutely no new ground while bungling its shameless rehashing of the old. The dare comes from the audience not laughing, as the wayward plot and generic millennial dialogue spins ever more out of control just to provide ludicrous twists.
