Hollyoaks have marked one year since the much-discussed sexual consent storyline with Ellie Nightingale finding happiness with newcomer Damon Kinsella.
This time last year, Ellie met Nick Savage at a ‘traffic light’ party. The pair flirted and drunk Ellie took him back to her bedroom, and was raped by Nick who did not get her consent before they had sex.
Ellie struggled for months before admitting to herself she had been raped reporting the crime, and was crushed when the police dropped charges against Nick due to insufficient evidence and half the village accused her of lying.
A few months later, Nick’s girlfriend Holly Cunningham reported him for raping her and he was eventually brought to justice.
In tonight’s E4 episode, Ellie attended another traffic light party as an act of defiance on the anniversary of her ordeal with Nick, and the evening had a much more positive ending as Ellie willingly slept with Damon.
A new video released on Hollyoaks’ official social channels shows the comparison between Ellie’s experience with Nick, when she was too inebriated to consent to sex, and tonight’s date with Damon, when she freely agrees to sleep with him, with the purpose of the video to highlight the importance of consent.
The long-running plot garnered praise for tackling the taboo topic, and Hollyoaks producers, crew and cast worked with youth charity The Mix and Rape Crisis as part of their research.
Sophie Porley, who plays Ellie, was nominated for Serial Drama Performance at this year’s National Television Awards, and the traffic party episode was nominated for Best Single Episode at the British Soap Awards.
Hollyoaks continues weeknights on E4 at 7pm and on Channel 4 at 6.30pm.
