They’re a long way from Walford – yes, this is the first official picture of EastEnders favourites Kat and Alfie in Redwater, the picturesque Irish harbour village that serves as the backdrop for their brand-new spin-off.
Filming has now wrapped on the six-part drama that will see Alfie (Shane Richie) Kat (Jessie Wallace) go in search of her long-lost son, a quest that uncovers secrets that the Kelly and Dolan families – who have lived in the quiet rural idyll for generations – would rather were left buried at sea…
Speaking recently, director Jesper Nielsen said: “We have a really important and fantastic story to tell. About how one woman’s search for a lost child opens Pandora’s box; revealing the terrible lies and secrets in the little village of Redwater.
“A story about how the strong bonds of love in a family can hold everything together, and yet at the same time – destroy everything.”
Joining Richie and Wallace will be a large ensemble cast including Fionnula Flanagan, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Ian McElhinney and Angeline Ball.
Writers on Redwater include such EastEnders alumni as Life on Mars creator Matthew Graham, Julie Dixon and Lauren Klee. The series is produced by Vicky Wharton and executive producer is Dominic Treadwell-Collins.
Redwater will be shown on BBC1 in 2017.
