Coronation Street star Paula Lane has admitted that fans will be left aghast by the manner of Kyle Platt’s death. When asked whether Kylie’s demise was one of the most shocking in the soap’s history, the actress said:
“Yes. Without a doubt. I’m not just saying this because I’m involved. I don’t think I’ve ever read an ending like it. The audience is going to get a real sense of shock and surprise at how sudden her death is. They’re going to feel those emotions.”
Corrie bosses are remaining tight lipped about how the character meets her maker, although Lane said she always knew that a death could be on the cards – especially after Kylie killed Callum in last year’s live episode:
“I have to admit that when they made Kylie a murderer, I did sort of think, ‘This means something quite big now’. It does change things for the character when they commit a big crime.
“So I knew it was a possibility – they have free rein to do what they want with your character once you make that decision to leave and sometimes when it is a much-loved character, they want to go for a big impactful exit.”
And where screen husband David (Jack P Shepherd) is concerned, Lane is sure that giving Kylie a fatal finish is the best way for her to leave.
“The family now gets a clear-cut end,” said the actress. “She’ll forever be in David’s heart, obviously, but one of the best ways for her to go is not by choice. David has to try and move on if she’s dead whereas if she’d been in prison or had run away, he would always be waiting for her. It will be a long process but it’ll give him some great drama.”
As for whether David will go off the rails again as a result of Kylie’s death, Lane added: “Probably. It’ll catapult him into a new lease of life. The way she goes will lead to so much for Jack to be able to play.”
