June Whitfield is to make a return to EastEnders as Sister Ruth – the nun who knows the truth about Kat Moon’s secret son.
Whitfield, 89, first made an appearance on the BBC1 soap back in May, when Kat (Jessie Wallace) paid an emotional visit to the nunnery where she gave birth to daughter Zoe.
But Kat left before Sister Ruth was able to recall that Kat also had a baby boy, who was delivered on the same night as Zoe.
Now, though, it seems that the truth is to come out, with Whitfield’s reappearance set to coincide with a Christmas return for both Kat and Alfie (Shane Richie) this Christmas.
“I am so thrilled to be returning to EastEnders to revisit Sister Ruth and am really looking forward to working with Jesse Wallace again,” Whitfield said today.
An EastEnders source added: “Kat and Alfie are going to have a life changing time back in Walford and Sister Ruth’s involvement is going to be crucial.
“She holds the key to a big part of Kat’s life, but are some things better off left in the past or will she confess her secrets?“
Executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins announced earlier this month that Kat and Alfie would be back in time for the festive season, the first time they’ve been seen in Albert Square since departing in May following a lottery scratch card win.
“Christmas in Walford is always the perfect time for uncomfortable family reunions – and Kat and Alfie’s brief return will lead to tears, laughter… and a mountain of secrets being unearthed for the Slater family.
“As Kat and Alfie hold on to each other and their marriage, the discovery that Kat has a secret son will lead to seismic waves through the Slaters – and ultimately lead to the Moons realising that the answers to so many questions lie across the sea in Ireland,” said the show boss.
Speculation has been rife as to the identity of Kat’s son, with one prominent theory being that he could in fact be Sean Slater (Rob Kazinsky), who was last seen in 2009.
All that’s known about future events, though, is that – following their brief return later this year – Kat and Alfie will next be seen in an as-yet-to-be-named six-part spin-off set in Ireland and to be broadcast in 2016.
