Troubled teen Lachlan White (Thomas Atkinson) is to finally show contrition for the crime of assaulting Alicia Metcalfe (Natalie Anderson).
Emmerdale’s producer Kate Oates has revealed that Lachlan will end up showing remorse for his actions, but hinted that Alicia may not find it easy to move on from her trauma.
Of the upcoming plotline, Oates said in an interview on the soap’s website: “The story isn’t quite over yet because one thing Lachlan hasn’t done is show true remorse. That is what’s really going to get to Alicia.
“The courts have had their say and the police have had their say. But what’s really important to her is that he looks her in the eye and says that he’s genuinely sorry for what he did.
“We’re going to tell another chapter of that story, where there’s a journey towards Lachlan actually having to face what he did and the realities of that. When he does that, it gives Alicia a chance to move on. But where are she and David actually going to move to?”
Up until now, Lachlan has insisted to Alicia that he wasn’t in the wrong, despite mum Chrissie (Louise Marwood) reporting him to the police. And as a result, David and Alicia’s marriage has been put under continuing strain.
The scene of sexual assault – which was broadcast before the watershed back in February – resulted in 89 complaints being made by viewers to Ofcom.
But, earlier this week, the communications regulator revealed that Emmerdale would not face investigation following its assessment of the complaints.
