Dame Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman bond over tortoises in new Esio Trot trailer

BBC1's New Year's Day drama also stars James Corden, and is adapted from the Roald Dahl story by Love Actually director Richard Curtis and his Vicar of Dibley co-writer Paul Mayhew-Archer

Dustin Hoffman comes out of his shell in the new trailer for BBC1 Christmas drama Esio Trot.

The trailer sees retired bachelor Mr Hoppy (Hoffman) attempt to win the heart of his neighbour Mrs Silver (Dame Judi Dench) by helping her to make her pet tortoise Alfie grow faster.

Actor James Corden provides the voiceover, introducing us to this tale of tortoises and lovers’ trysts. The one-off drama – adapted from the Roald Dahl story by Love Actually director Richard Curtis and his Vicar of Dibley co-writer Paul Mayhew-Archer – will be shown on New Year’s Day at 6.30pm on BBC1.
