Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) is taken aback next week when Tim presents her with an engagement ring that he’s bought from Barlow’s Buys. But daughter Sophie (Brooke Vincent) is unconvinced and asks Sally whether she really wants to marry Tim. Will Sally be able to steel herself and tell her boyfriend that she doesn’t really want to get hitched? Actor Joe Duttine, who plays the hapless Tim, reveals all about the upcoming romantic complications…
So, big question: does Tim love Sally?
I think he does love her, but I’m not quite sure what his past experiences of being in love are. I doubt he’s ever been swept off his feet – he’s probably been too feckless for that and too much of a commitment phobe. He’s probably just hopped from pad to pad never really having a very romantic relationship and just drifting through life.
Does he now think he has to up his game and be a bit more romantic?
He tries to. There was the moment where she wanted to go to a flower show when he wanted to go on a stag do with his mates. On the one hand, there’s this immature side of him wanting to hang on to this eternal youth but then on the other, he wants to step up his game for Sally. So he changes his mind about going to the stag do and instead agrees to take her to the flower show.
Next week, he’s spotted in a jewellers – is he thinking about proposing to Sally? And, if not, what is he doing?
No, he’s not thinking of proposing. That’s the confusion – he goes in there to buy Faye a watch but then Sally jumps to the conclusion that he’s going to propose to her. So when she finds out that he wasn’t going to propose to her, Tim thinks he’d better pretend that he would be interested in getting married just so he doesn’t upset her. So he then goes to buy a ring with the intention of proposing to Sally because he feels it’s what she wants. He’s trying to please her.
Does Tim want to get married?
He gets caught in a catch 22 situation. He thinks she wants to get married, so he realises that he should maybe up his game and get married otherwise he’ll be out again. He makes a commitment to her that he’s going to be a bit more mature. And he is worried about getting dumped!
What’s Sally’s reaction when he presents her with a ring?
Well, it’s a tiny cheap ring from Barlow’s Buys, but then he did get the most expensive ring in the shop! However, they end up having a conversation in the Websters where it becomes clear that neither of them really want to get married, so he doesn’t end up proposing.
Tell us about the moment in the Rovers when Tim ‘un-proposes’…
Everyone’s expecting him to propose and Julie sets up this sort of engagement party in the Rovers where Tim and Sally turn it round and make a bit of a joke of it. He gives her the ring and sort of un-proposes – it’s quite sweet really.
Is he pleased with her decision to not get married?
He’s really relieved and happy to carry on as they were. It sort of brings them closer together because they’ve found they’ve got more in common.
Is this the happiest they’ve been to date – happily unmarried?
Yeah I think so, there’s no pressure for them to get married now and I think it’s nice that they just get on, have fun and have a fairly straightforward relationship. They make a fun couple.
