The BBC has today revealed that Sonia Fowler’s daughter Rebecca is to be played by Jasmine Armfield.
Show bosses have described the teenager as “well-behaved but also a little fighter”. Following in the footsteps of her trumpet-playing mum, Rebecca is passionate about music and someone who can play the guitar beautifully. Although she wants to do well in life and make her parents proud, Rebecca’s determination will be “the making or undoing of her”.
Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) memorably gave birth to Rebecca on the living room floor back in 2000 when she didn’t even know she was pregnant. The young mum then decided to put the baby up for adoption, but in a cruel twist of fate, Martin – the father of her child – knocked down and killed the love of her life Jamie. Sonia and Martin then fell in love and regained custody of Rebecca.
In January 2014, viewers will see Sonia return to the Square accompanied by her daughter. Speaking of her comeback, actress Natalie Cassidy recently said:
After seven years being out of the show, apart from the odd episode, I am extremely excited and honoured to be making a full-time return. I feel so lucky as an actress to get back to my roots. With Dominic Treadwell-Collins as executive producer, it’s such an exciting time for the show. I cannot wait to work with Patsy Palmer and Lindsey Coulson again. Bring it on!”
