Former Coronation Street star Bill Ward to join Emmerdale cast as James Barton

The former Corrie villain, Charlie Stubbs, will play John Barton's estranged brother

Coronation Street fans will know him as evil Charlie Stubbs, who met his end at the hands of Tracy Barlow, but now actor Bill Ward is heading for soap pastures new as the latest addition to Emmerdale’s Barton clan.

Ward will play James Barton, older brother of the late John, who makes his first appearance when he pays a surprise visit to John’s widow Moira.

James is a farmer, and a single father of three grown-up sons, who had never managed to heal the rift between himself and his brother before John’s untimely death when his land rover slid over a cliff.

Ward will start filming on Emmerdale in September and will appear on screen from late October.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said the star. “The Emmerdale team are a very talented bunch indeed and I’m extremely chuffed to have been asked to join them.”

Emmerdale series producer Kate Oates said: “I’m delighted to welcome Bill to the show. The Barton family have always been extremely popular with our audience and the arrival of James will be the start of a new era for them.”
