David Witts, who plays EastEnders tough nut heart-throb Joey Branning, has taken home Best Newcomer at this year’s National Television Awards.
He saw off competition from Emmerdale’s Liam Fox, Coronation Street actress Natalie Gumede and Joseph Thompson from Hollyoaks.
Upon accepting the award, the actor said: “Goodness me, I really didn’t expect this. So I haven’t prepared a speech, which is somewhat to my detriment. I’m just pleased to be here, I really am. To get this is unbelievable.” Witts then went on to thank his bosses at EastEnders, the fans who voted for him, his family, agent and girlfriend.
Witts, who made his Walford debut in June 2012, has had a prominent opening year in the BBC1 soap thanks to his character getting involved with cousin Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa). During Christmas 2012, Joey’s father Derek (Jamie Foreman) was killed off in an episode seen by over 11 million viewers.
