Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Bill Pullman plays a man looking to trick his way into regaining the piece of land he sold to his sister (Anjelica Huston) in this sedate rural comedy, which lumbers its talented cast with the weight of an uninspired story. We are here mainly to watch the two stars argue over a dispute that isn't hugely interesting, although the script does offer sporadic moments of levity, mostly involving Pullman getting what he deserves. While his character is undoubtedly the villain of his own story, Pullman makes you love his scoundrel spirit enough to root for him towards the end. Less convincing are Huston, whose one function is to shout at Pullman, and David Morse as his somewhat redundant best friend. Some may find something pleasant in Trouble's ambling misanthropy, but, beyond the spite, there's simply not enough for the cast to sink their teeth into.
