Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Director Jordan Peele's chilling follow-up to his Oscar-winning hit Get Out could carry the tagline "We are our own worst enemy". Inspired by the vintage episode Mirror Image from The Twilight Zone TV series, it sees the middle-class Wilson family vacationing in Santa Cruz when they start being stalked and menaced by degraded doppelgangers of themselves. While the socio-political allegory feels a little clunky this time and the tight plotting stumbles into overwrought predictability, once the genre tropes finally reveal themselves, it's still a weird and wild ride down the rabbit hole, impressively juggling comedy and horror to hugely entertaining effect. What's happening is linked to a unique mythic construct of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Invasion of the Body Snatchers that does sag somewhat under its own lofty ambitions. But a great cast play their dual roles with scary aplomb - especially the centrally important Lupita Nyong'o - all adeptly platformed by Peele's astute film-making finesse.
