Our Score
The Autobots go Camelot in the fifth exhaustingly bombastic smashathon of the alien car-warrior franchise. Under the watchful eye of Transformers historian Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins, good value), Oxford professor Vivian Wembley (Laura Haddock, overdoing the English Rose line) joins forces with inventor Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg, coasting) to find Merlin's legendary staff, the key to stopping the Decepticons annihilating Earth entirely. Michael Bay (in his last outing apparently) takes no prisoners in this mind-numbing spectacle connecting Arthurian legend and Stonehenge with undersea odysseys and Escher-style abstract battles in outer space. Throughout all this Bay proves he has two modes of directing: loud and loudest. If the convoluted story made any sense it might have helped rein in the incomprehensible and mega-sized action contained within the technically dazzling visual sprawl. But as is always the case in this much-maligned grandiose series, the whirling metal-crunching madness and mayhem is really all that matters.

Summary

The shape-changing robots and their human allies face a confrontation with their original creator, who has brainwashed their leader and intends to save her own home planet by destroying Earth. To save the human race they must recover an ancient artefact from Arthurian legend - but their mission is threatened by old enemies as they uncover a terrible secret about the history of the world. Sci-fi adventure sequel, starring Mark Wahlberg, Anthony Hopkins, Gemma Chan, Stanley Tucci and John Turturro.
