So audacious in its detail that it has almost become a historical document, The Wire (starring Dominic West as Detective Jimmy McNulty) is, in the best possible sense, far too much to take in during one sitting.

Every piece of Baltimore’s sprawling Noughties society, from the technologically decrepit police force to the child pawns of the drugs trade, via logistics, local government, the education system and the media, was pulled apart and reassembled within the narrow frame of a 4:3 box aspect ratio.
