EastEnders: Rainie Cross makes surprise return

But what business does she have with Ian Beale?

Manipulative and ruthless Rainie Cross (Tanya Franks) made a surprise return to EastEnders tonight and, from the looks of it, Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) wasn’t too happy about her reappearance.

In scenes just broadcast on BBC1, Rainie – the sister of former Walford resident Tanya – made a shock arrival at Ian’s restaurant and greeted him with the words: “Seeing as you have trouble picking up the phone, I just thought I’d make it easy for you and drop by.”

Throughout the course of the episode, Ian had been seen liaising a person listed only as ‘R’ in his mobile’s address book who seemed connected to his whereabouts on the night Lucy was killed. But it was only in the closing minutes that Rainie was revealed to be Ian’s mysterious contact.

Of tonight’s developments, an EastEnders spokesperson said to RadioTimes.com: “It never rains but it pours for Ian! Having received numerous texts and phone calls over the past couple of weeks, it has now been revealed that the mystery sender was Rainie and now she’s back.

“But why has she returned and what does she know about Good Friday that Ian is so desperate to keep quiet?”

During her original time in the Square, Rainie was seen struggling with addictions to both alcohol and drugs. Her most high profile storyline came when she had a crack-fuelled affair with Phil Mitchell during 2010.

Rainie hasn’t been seen on screen since December 2011 when she left after failing to reconcile with Tanya. Since that time, actress Tanya Franks has appeared in New Tricks and the TV movie Liz & Dick, as well as starring as Lucy Stevens, the disreputable sister of Olivia Colman’s character Detective Miller in ITV’s Broadchurch.
