Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has revealed that she wouldn’t be a fan of her character Bethany Platt embarking on a relationship with Craig Tinker.
“I think it just has to be a strong friendship between Bethany and Craig,” the actress commented to RadioTimes.com. “It works better that way, especially after everything she’s been through. She shouldn’t get a boyfriend straight away because she’d certainly find it hard to trust people. I hope it stays with them being really good friends.”
The ITV soap’s recent storyline has seen Craig prove instrumental in seeing predatory police officer Neil face justice after he and groomer Nathan conspired to sexually exploit Bethany. However, Craig is now hiding his true feelings for the vulnerable teen, having begged his mum Beth not to say anything about his love for Bethany.
Upcoming episodes will now see Bethany having to summon up the courage to testify against Nathan at trial, although sneak paparazzi photos saw her tussling with Nathan’s cohort Mel, leaving viewers anxious that she won’t make it as far as the courtroom.
Speaking about Neil’s fate and Bethany’s future, Fallon added: “I hope that Nathan and Neil get what’s coming to them. But for Bethany, it’s going to be a long road to recovery. This isn’t something that she can get over in a couple of weeks – it will stay with her forever and she won’t go back to being as bolshy as she used to be.
“I’d like to see her get some qualifications or work in Audrey’s as her apprentice. Bethany should now do something positive with her life and have a successful career.”
