Returning Hollyoaks stars Sarah Jayne Dunn and Gary Lucy have teased more about rejoining the show as Mandy Richardson and Luke Morgan.
Speaking together on the red carpet at this evening’s British Soap Awards, the pair said fans will be shocked at what’s happened to their characters in the years they’ve been off screen.
“Mandy is not quite as you remember her is all I can really say,” said Dunn. “I’m struggling to talk about it without giving anything away! You’ll just have to wait and see…”
Lucy continued: “Luke is definitely not the same person and it is definitely not for the better. Hopefully it’ll be make for good viewing though.”
The pair all but confirmed their characters will cross paths: “It would be rude if they didn’t!” laughed Dunn. “I think they have to, it would be a wasted opportunity if they didn’t because of their past so it makes sense.”
Although Dunn was last on screen full-time in 2011 (she made a cameo in a 2013 episode of Hollyoaks Later), Lucy has not been on screen as Luke since 2002, but says he had no hesitation in bringing the character back.
“The producer Bryan Kirkwood talked me through some fantastic stories and I thought it was a great opportunity to bring back my favourite telly character.
The plots are great, Bryan is such an enthusiastic producer, and I’m involved with Sarah, Nick Pickard (Tony Hutchinson), Ashley Taylor Dawson (Darren Osbourne) who I love.”
One potential downside of Mandy’s return is the possible threat it poses to Tony and Diane’s future happiness… “Mandy and Tony have a history together,” says Dunn. “They went through some really tough times and their paths will have to cross.” Does that mean Tony’s head will be turned by the return of his ex-wife?
Hollyoaks continues weeknights on E4 at 7pm, and on Channel 4 at 6.30pm.
