Coronation Street: fresh details of Emily Bishop’s New Year’s Day farewell are revealed

Actress Eileen Derbyshire is taking a break from Corrie at the start of 2016

Emily Bishop will say her goodbyes on New Year’s Day when she heads off to Peru. But long-standing lodger Norris Cole will do his best to spoil Emily’s exit when he has a falling out with her.

Weatherfield stalwart Emily is to embark on a new adventure after getting in touch with nephew Spider, who is currently working at an orphanage in south America.

After getting some encouragement from local vicar Billy, Emily decides to join Spider in Peru, despite Norris’s jibes that she’s too old to be working as a volunteer!

But knowing how much he cares for Emily, Rita will be seen advising Norris to put things right between them as he’ll regret it if he doesn’t.

And – sure enough – as Rita, Mary, Ken and Billy gather to see Emily off on her trip to Peru, Norris arrives and hands her a bag full of pencils, explaining that they’re to help with her voluntary work at the school. Will Emily and Norris clear the air before she leaves?

Actress Eileen Derbyshire – who has asked for time away from filming – has been a mainstay of Corrie since its earliest days, having first appeared as Emily in January 1961. Only William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, has done a longer stint, having been present since episode one.

Other cast members set to exit temporarily from Coronation Street in the new year include Alison King (Carla), David Neilson (Roy), Les Dennis (Michael) and Brooke Vincent (Sophie).
