Sinister Vincent Hubbard has already made a big impact on EastEnders by putting the frighteners on Ronnie Mitchell and punching hard man Phil. But it seems that Walford’s latest villain isn’t done just yet with scaring the residents of Albert Square.
“There’s a lot more. Wait until you see some of the scenes coming up – they raise the hairs,” actor Richard Blackwood told RadioTimes.com on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards. “The writers on EastEnders know what they’re doing. They grab you and keep you watching. I’ve just spoken to them actually and they said, ‘we’ve got a lot more you’. So the audience is in for some trouble!”
Scenes shown on the BBC1 soap last Friday saw Vincent coolly take down Phil during a confrontation at Deals on Wheels. But Blackwood revealed that he didn’t feel as composed as his character in the run-up to filming.
“I’m still shocked that it happened! When I read the script, I was blown away because Phil is a legend. And then, before I knew it, we were on the set shooting the scene. But Steve McFadden is a lovely, humble guy. And he made it so much easier for me. I think he knew how hard it was for me to shoot the scene because of who he is.”
As for how nervous we should be about what Vincent has in store, Blackwood added: “The thing about Vincent that I love is that he’s very human. He’s got a dark side, but he only acts that way with people who are in the same realm as him. So if you’re in the underworld, he’s very much like that. But if you’re an innocent person, then he won’t mess with you.”
And despite Vincent’s criminal connections, it seems that EastEnders fans have already been won over. “People are now calling me Vincent on the street! I really don’t mind because it means I’m doing it right. It means that the acting is good and that’s all I’m concerned about.”
