After being kept in the dark since September, Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) is to finally find out that husband Alfie (Shane Richie) started the fire that has left her with permanent scarring.
“It’s not going to be a good Christmas for Kat and Alfie,” says actor Shane Richie. “All of that tension reaches a crescendo very soon. Alfie has been living a lie for months, so it was kind of a relief when we filmed the pay-off and got it out of the way.”
The revelation comes after Kat and Alfie attend an appointment at the council office, where they’re told that some houses have become available for them in Hill. However, as the Moons make a life-changing decision, nothing can prepare them for the future they’re about to face when Kat discovers the truth about Alfie’s actions. But the big question is: can Kat forgive Alfie for what he’s done?
“Well, it was only supposed to be a bin fire but, of course, the whole bleedin’ lot went up,” continues the actor. “People could have died, Alfie could have lost his family. And that’s where the guilt lies. Kat is wondering, ‘Jesus, what was he thinking?'”
The Moons have come through so much in recent years, what with Kat’s affair with Derek, Alfie’s aborted wedding to Roxy and his recent struggles to find work. But can they get over the fact that Kat almost burned to death because of Alfie’s actions?
“I can’t tell you,” Richie says with a smile. “I think that they’ll always try to find a way through. I’ve just had a meeting with our executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins and he’s talked me and Jessie Wallace through our storylines leading up to Easter. And wow – it’s like the last 13 years of Kat and Alfie just goes bang! When he told me last year about the fire, I was thinking, ‘where do you take Alfie after that?’ But now, I need to stay to see all this through. Both Jesse and I are really excited about it.”
