Merna, who debuted on the C4 soap in 2006, made her exit in scenes just broadcast during E4’s first-look episode as Carmel lost her life in the wake of this week’s train crash.

In the scenes leading up to her demise, Carmel was ostracised by the rest of the McQueens after her plan to flee with Theresa’s daughter Kathleen-Angel was exposed. But following the collision, Carmel attempted to redeem herself by having a showdown with Sonny Valentine, which unfortunately resulted in a train carriage exploding in an enormous fireball.

At the end of the episode, Carmel died surrounded by tearful family members, including Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe), Theresa (Jorgie Porter) and Myra (Nicole Barber-Lane).

Speaking about her final scenes, Merna said: “I decided at the beginning of the year that I wanted to move on. And when I found out about this storyline, I just thought it was amazing and a perfect way to say goodbye. They were real tears!”

On the filming of her on-screen death, she added: “I spent a full day on the floor of that train carriage. I lay in that same position for the entire time, holding hands with Jorgie. We knew what was coming, we knew it was going to be emotional and hard work and very draining. But we all just wanted to make the scenes the best they could possibly be.”
