The GoT author thinks the fact that The Hobbit's Smaug can talk "would give him an intellectual advantage" over the dragons of Westeros

Game of Thrones and The Hobbit are both huge fantasy hits, with armies of dedicated fans on their trail, but when it comes to their prospective dragons? Well, George RR Martin is pretty confident he knows who would win in a fight.

Both of the fantasy franchises feature the scaly mythical creatures – with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing The Hobbit’s gold-loving beast, and Daenerys Targaryen boasting a trio of the fire-breathers in Game of Thrones – but, according to George RR Martin, it’s clear what would happen if they were pitted against each other.

Apparently, the dragon’s of Westeros wouldn’t stand a chance if they were faced with Tolkien’s Smaug.

Asked if Drogon could take on Smaug, Martin replied: “As competitive as I am, no. Drogon is a very young dragon…”

“Not to mention Smaug, like, talks, which would give him an intellectual advantage,” he added, at a talk in New York about his new coffee-table book The World of Ice & Fire.

So there you have it, fantasy fans. No word yet on what would happen if Bilbo and Ned Stark came face to face – or whether Sauron could out-evil Cersei…
